Mersey Boroughs ITT

One of the countries leading providers of truly school led School Direct Primary Teacher Training

Are you a graduate career changer, or are you just about to graduate? Is teaching the career for you? Are you looking for the best teacher training route?

Our well established and highly successful PRIMARY programme has a fantastic success rate:

  • Last year, 100% of our trainees graduated as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ teachers
  • Our employment rate is consistently very high – between 97 and 100% each year
  • Our rates of retaining teachers after training is excellent – all of our first cohort are still teaching and many have now moved into leadership roles.

Mersey Boroughs ITT Partnership is a school-centred provider of initial teacher training – a ‘SCITT’. The partnership is led by St Mary & St Paul’s CE Primary School, who are a well established provider of School Direct initial teacher training places, and is based at St Mary & St Paul’s School and our training centre we have developed in Longton Lane Primary School. We work in partnership with schools from six local authority areas across Merseyside – Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton, Liverpool, Halton and Wigan – to provide high quality graduate teacher training for prospective primary school teachers.

We offer a ‘General Primary’ programme (5-11 age range), with opportunities for trainees who prefer the upper end of that age range to focus more on Key Stage 2. Because we have relatively small cohorts – about 30 trainees a year – we are able to offer a very personalised training experience.

We offer places through both the School Direct route into teaching, and also through our ‘core’ places allocated to us as an accredited provider of ITT. All applications go through UCAS – you can find us under Mersey Boroughs ITT and St Mary & St Paul‘s CE Primary School.

All of our trainees also have the chance to gain masters credits and a PGCE awarded by Sheffield Hallam University – which is ranked in the Top 10 universities in the country for Education (http://www.theguardian.com/education/ng-interactive/2015/may/25/university-league-tables-2016#S290).

We also don’t see the training year as being the end of our commitment to our trainees, and so all of our trainees are invited to attend (for free) our NQT programme to support them in their first year of teaching, and to our RQT conference days as they move on in their career. Contact us at merseyboroughsitt@knowsley.gov.uk to find out more about a fantastic career in teaching.

“Train in great Schools. Learn from amazing Teachers.”

Our Course:

Our primary course runs for a full school year – from the beginning of September until late July. Trainees on the course spend a great deal of time in school – on average, around 10% more time than on a ‘traditional’ university PGCE route – and benefit from real immersion into school and teaching from the very start of the course. We think that this very practical approach is one of the reasons why our primary course leads to such a high employment rate (97%) – because our trainees turn into skilled teachers very quickly during their training year. The practical elements of the course are backed up by high quality training led by outstanding current practitioners – lead teachers, Specialist Leaders of Education and so on.

‘The training process works extremely effectively and results in trainees of a high quality at the end of the programme’ (External Examiner July 2018.)

We’re also delighted that our trainees have the chance to work with university colleagues from Sheffield Hallam, working towards the award of a PGCE as well as QTS. We offer a balance of great partnerships, high quality school experiences and top-notch training that we know makes our Primary programme a great way to get into primary school teaching and our trainees highly employable.

Applications for our 2019/20 places are open via UCAS Teacher Training – www.ucas.com. Our Mersey Borough’s course code is provider code: 1X8 course code: 2DFY and St Mary and St Paul’s Schools Direct course code is provider code: 17Q and course code 3CLS.
